I threw the ball 4-5 times per game in high school. We ran the option. I was 175 pounds. In our state championship game my junior year, I went 1 …for 4 passing for MINUS three yards.
Zero phone calls from recruiters. Zero interest. Nothing.
Iowa took a chance on a kid nobody else wanted.
Barry Alvarez mentioned my name. They put every pass I
That phone call led to:
Four years starting at Iowa
A Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York
The 1985 Big Ten Championship
Eight years in the NFL
Twenty years coaching college football
My dad had a great sense of humor. After that first visit, when Coach Fry offered me a scholarship, I flew home and told him, “Dad, I think they offered me a full ride.”
He said: “Have they seen you play, son?”
The truth is, sometimes the best opportunities come when you’re not the obvious choice.
When you’re moldable. When you have something to prove. When you’re hungry.
I always tell young athletes: If you have the passion to play, there’s a place for you. It might not be the dream school you imagined as a kid. But if you work hard and stay ready, you never know where one phone call might lead. #shortsShow More

The Mental Side of College Football That Nobody Talks About Video …
The Mental Side of College Football That Nobody Talks About
Video Title: “College Football Players Are Human Computers (Here’s Why)”
Description:
College football players aren’t just athletes – they’re human computers running calculations …while 80,000 people scream at them.
Everyone focuses on the physical side of college football – how big, how fast, how strong these players are. But what we don’t talk about enough is the incredible mental processing happening on every single play.
In this video, we break down exactly what’s happening in a quarterback’s mind during those crucial 2.5 seconds in the pocket:
🧠 What QBs Process:
Reading defensive formations
Identifying coverage schemes
Calculating receiver routes
Making protection calls
Processing crowd noise and coaching signals
Executing split-second decisions under immense pressure
These players have memorized 300+ plays, understand complex schemes, and make game-changing decisions faster than most people can think – all while 300-pound humans try to tackle them.
The mental toughness required at this level is absolutely extraordinary. Next time you watch college football, pay attention to the chess match happening between the ears, not just the physical battle on the field.
What’s the most impressive mental aspect of college football to you? Let me know in the comments!

Lew pauses, already laughing
So we make the bet, Mike goes 70 yds. for a TD.
But then – and this is where I should’ve learned my lesson – halftime rolls …around and I’m feeling cocky again. ‘Mike,’ I say, ‘lightning doesn’t strike twice. Bet you can’t get another one past that Purdue defense.’
Shakes his head
Third quarter, Mike takes a handoff and waltzes into the end zone like he’s taking a Sunday stroll. Two touchdowns, same game.

Gary Dolphin settles into press boxes across the Big Ten with the same ritual every Saturday. He arrives early, surveys the field, tests his headset, and takes in the unique …atmosphere that defines each venue. For nearly three decades as Iowa’s radio voice, he’s been transforming concrete and steel into living, breathing cathedrals of college football for Hawkeye fans who can’t be there.
“It’s not about favorites,” Dolphin reflects. “It’s about understanding what gives each place that magic you can actually hear and feel through the radio waves.”
Kinnick Stadium: Home Sweet Home
“There’s no place like Kinnick on a crisp October afternoon when 70,000 Hawkeye fans are ready to will their team to victory.”
“The way sound travels at Kinnick is perfect for radio,” Dolphin explains. “When that crowd gets going, you don’t have to tell listeners it’s loud—they can feel the energy building through their speakers.”
The famous wave to the children’s hospital has become one of his signature moments to describe. “Seventy thousand people stopping mid-game to wave at sick kids watching from hospital windows. That’s the magic you can’t manufacture.” #shortsShow More

The 4th-and-23 Miracle That Actually Happened
16 seconds on the clock. Iowa down 27-22. Fourth down and 23 yards to go.
In college football, this situation has about a 3% success rate. …With 16 seconds left and needing a touchdown? The odds are even worse.
But Chuck Hartlieb and Marv Cook didn’t know about statistics in that moment.
Hartlieb took the snap, Cook ran his route, and somehow – 28 yards later – Iowa had scored the game-winning touchdown. Final score: 29-27. #shortsShow More

The Untold Story Behind Marv Cook’s Success
Marv Cook didn’t become a 2x NFL All-Pro by accident.
While fans only saw the Sunday highlights, Cook’s real work happened in the shadows. Early …morning workouts in empty gyms. Late-night film sessions. Recovery sessions when his body begged him to quit. The discipline to say no to every social invitation. Years of this routine with zero recognition.
Most athletes chase the spotlight. Cook built his foundation in darkness.
Here’s what separates good from great: Great doesn’t perform for an audience. Great performs for excellence.
Think about it – while everyone else is posting their workouts on social media, the real champions are already done training. While others talk about their goals, champions are hitting them. While most people wait for motivation, champions show up regardless of how they feel.
The world rewards what it sees. But champions are built by what it doesn’t.
Your reputation gets built in public through your achievements. But your character? That gets forged in private through your daily choices when nobody’s keeping score.
So here’s my question for you: Are you building your reputation or your character?

"What If the Stories That Never Make Headlines Are the Only Ones That Matter?"
In 2000, Iowa’s football team had a tough season. They missed their …
In 2000, Iowa’s football team had a tough season. They missed their bowl game completely, leaving a group of seniors heartbroken – their college careers ending without the celebration they’d …worked years to achieve.
Most coaches would move on to the next season, focus on the new recruits, forget about the players who were already gone.
Coach Kirk Ferentz did something different.
When Iowa finally made their bowl game the following year, Ferentz bought watches – the kind teams usually give to players who participate in bowl games. But these weren’t for his current team. These were for every single senior from 2000 who had already graduated and moved on with their lives.
He personally delivered each watch with a simple message: “Thank you for your sacrifice. This victory belongs to you too.”
No cameras captured this moment. No press release announced it. No social media celebrated it. Just a coach who understood that today’s success is built on yesterday’s sacrifice.
This story perfectly illustrates what real leadership looks like behind the scenes. Great leaders don’t just celebrate with the people in the room – they find ways to honor the people who should have been there. They remember the foundation builders, the ones who did the grinding work when nobody was watching.
WHAT THIS TEACHES US ABOUT LEADERSHIP:
Recognition isn’t about timing – it’s about memory
The best leaders honor those who laid the groundwork
True leadership happens when no one is looking
Success belongs to more people than just those holding the trophy

Scott Davis shared something with me that completely changed how I think about making it professionally. What he said about talent vs. belief will shift your entire perspective on what …it really takes to go pro.
In this video, we dive deep into:
✅ Why “hard work” isn’t what you think it is
✅ The brutal reality of grinding when everyone doubts you
✅ How belief becomes your most valuable asset
✅ The difference between regular work and PRO-LEVEL work
✅ Why most people quit before they breakthrough
Scott’s key insight: “Unless you have immense talent, making it professionally isn’t about the work. It’s about believing in yourself when everyone thinks you’re crazy.”
This is for everyone who’s been grinding for years with no proof it’s working. For those dealing with constant questions about backup plans. For anyone who’s ever wondered if they’re crazy for chasing their dreams.
📌 KEY QUOTE: “Everyone works hard. Not everyone believes hard.”

"The Performance Psychology Secret That Turns Pressure Into Your Advantage"
7 Ways To Beat Imposter Syndrome (From Rob Houghtlin’s Game-Winning …
7 Ways To Beat Imposter Syndrome (From Rob Houghtlin’s Game-Winning Kick in 1985’s #1 vs #2 Showdown)
Most people think confidence comes first. They’re completely wrong.
In 1985, Rob Houghtlin stepped onto …the field with the game on the line – #1 Iowa vs #2 Michigan. As a specialist, he was only on the field for a few plays per game, but each one could make or break the team’s entire season.
Here’s what he learned about performing under pressure that you can apply to overcome imposter syndrome:
1. Your Prep Attitude Matters More Than Talent 🎯
Champions aren’t born confident – they build confidence through preparation. Walk into every situation thinking “I’ve done the work. Now it’s time to execute.” Create your own pre-performance routine that puts you in the right mental state.
2. Train Your Mind Like Your Body 🧠
Mental toughness isn’t about being fearless. It’s about performing with fear. Practice visualization daily. Master your breathing. Control your self-talk. Your mind needs reps just like your muscles.
3. Change How You See Pressure 💪
Most people ask: “What if I fail?” High performers ask: “What if I succeed?” Pressure isn’t your enemy – it’s your opportunity to separate yourself from everyone else. Embrace it.
4. Practice Under Pressure 🔥
You can’t simulate game situations in comfort. You need uncomfortable reps. Seek out high-stakes practice scenarios. The more pressure you face in training, the calmer you’ll be when it counts.
5. Find Someone Who’s Been There 🤝
Good mentors don’t just teach technique. They show you that everyone battles self-doubt. Find people who’ve performed under pressure. Learn how they think, not just what they do.
6. Make Excellence Your Daily Practice 📈
Champions don’t flip a switch on game day. They train at championship level every day. Treat every practice like the big game. Every small interaction. Every moment of preparation builds your foundation for big moments.
7. Every Moment IS a Big Moment ⚡
Stop waiting for “the big moment” to show up. Treat every opportunity with the same focus. This eliminates pressure shock by already being used to performing at your best.
The Bottom Line: 💯
Confidence isn’t a prerequisite for action. It’s the result of it.
Start performing despite the doubt. The confidence will follow.
Remember – even champions feel like frauds sometimes. The difference? They perform anyway.
What’s your biggest challenge with imposter syndrome? Let me know in the comments below, and don’t forget to subscribe for more performance psychology content!

The smallest details decide the biggest moments.
October 19, 1985.
#1 Iowa vs #2 Michigan.
2 seconds left. Game tied.
Rob Houghtlin lines up for a 29-yard field goal to win it all.
But here’s …what most people missed:
Bo Schembechler starts his mind games. Calls timeout after timeout. Gestures wildly from the sideline. Tries every trick to get inside the kicker’s head.
Most players would crumble.
Not Houghtlin.
He does something nobody expected.
He gestures back at Bo.
Right there. In front of 60,000 screaming fans. With the #1 ranking on the line.
The audacity.
Then he splits the uprights. Perfect kick. Game over.
Here’s the lesson:
Success isn’t just about handling pressure.
It’s about controlling the small details when everything is falling apart.
Your body language when the boss questions your work
Your tone when the client pushes back
Your focus when the deadline gets moved up
The people who win big moments?
They master the tiny details everyone else ignores.
What small detail are you working on today?
P.S. – That kick is still talked about 40 years later. Not because it went through the uprights. But because of how Houghtlin handled everything leading up to it. #shortsShow More

Why Football Teaches More About Life Than Any Classroom | 4 Lessons That Changed Everything
VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Most people think football is just about X’s and O’s, but they’re missing the real …game entirely. After years of playing football, I learned that the most valuable lessons weren’t about strategy or technique—they were about resilience, character, and what it really takes to succeed when everything’s falling apart.
In this video, I break down the 4 most powerful lessons football taught me about life, business, and bouncing back from failure. These aren’t just sports lessons—they’re life principles that apply whether you’re an entrepreneur, student, parent, or anyone facing adversity.
What You’ll Learn:
Why getting hit doesn’t define you (and what actually does)
The 4th quarter mindset that separates champions from everyone else
Why your ability to call audibles matters more than perfect planning
How losing your “star players” can actually make you stronger
The truth about resilience (spoiler: it’s not what you think)
Whether you’ve played sports or not, these lessons will change how you handle challenges, setbacks, and pressure in every area of your life.
What’s the most important lesson sports taught you about resilience? Drop a comment below—I read every single one and respond to as many as I can. #shortsShow More

The game got 10x more fun when I stopped trying to have fun 🏈
Most athletes think preparation kills spontaneity and makes the game feel robotic. They couldn’t be more wrong.
In …this video, I break down why the most prepared players actually have the MOST fun on the field – and how this mindset shift changed everything for me.
What you’ll learn:
Why hope creates anxiety (and preparation creates confidence)
The difference between surviving vs thriving in high-pressure moments
How mental preparation actually unleashes creativity instead of limiting it
Why the best performers look like they’re having the time of their lives
This applies way beyond sports – whether you’re facing job interviews, presentations, or any high-stakes situation in life.
The players having the most fun? They’re usually the most prepared.
Let me know in the comments: What’s one area where better preparation could make your “game” more enjoyable?

This story resonated with me and the conversation of NIL seems relevant : It means you represent more than a team. You represent farmers who wake up at 4am, teachers …who stay late to help struggling students, and families who plan their entire fall around Saturday games.
