Ricky Stanzi’s Secret to Leadership: Why Humility Wins in Football and Life
What’s the real secret behind Iowa Hawkeye football’s success? It’s …
What’s the real secret behind Iowa Hawkeye football’s success? It’s not just talent-it’s a culture of humility and leadership, embodied by stars like Ricky Stanzi.
In this episode, we share one …of the most powerful lessons from Coach Doyle-a mindset we call “the window and the mirror.” When things go wrong, look in the mirror and take responsibility. When things go right, look out the window and give credit to others. This philosophy, echoed by Coach Ferentz and lived out by Hawkeye greats like Ricky Stanzi, is the foundation of Iowa football’s legacy.
Watch as we dive into how this mindset shaped Stanzi’s career, led to three bowl victories (including the iconic 2010 Orange Bowl), and continues to inspire leaders on and off the field.

January 13, 1989: Standing on the empty Kansas State campus during Bill Snyder’s first-ever recruiting weekend.
Sports Illustrated had just called it “the worst football program in America.” Facilities crumbling, coming …off a winless season. But there was something about Snyder’s quiet intensity that made you believe.
Meanwhile, Iowa was calling with bowl games, established success, and Kinnick Stadium’s familiar shadow.
At 17, I chose what I could see over what I could only imagine.
Within 3 years, Snyder engineered college football’s greatest resurrection story, building a national contender from absolute zero.
Life’s crossroads look so different in hindsight. I had a front-row seat to the “before” picture of an absolute miracle, standing with the architect before his masterpiece existed.
Sometimes I wonder about that road not taken – what it would have felt like to help build something extraordinary from nothing.
What “Bill Snyder opportunity” have you faced? Did you take the leap of faith or choose the visible path?

Ever wonder what REALLY …happens on the sidelines during those crucial game moments? Dave shares a priceless story about QB Paul Burmeister, Coach Hayden Fry, and a decision that launched a thousand papers into the air! 📝💨
Picture this: Iowa vs. Indiana. All they needed was one first down to secure the win. Simple run play called.
But then…quarterback Paul Burmeister spots what looks like an opportunity – a cornerback backing off – and decides to check to a quick route against coaching instructions.
Dave recalls: “I’m going, oh Paul, no…” as Hayden grabs him: “WHAT’S HE DOING?”
The corner had baited them! The play fails, the clock stops, and suddenly Coach Fry’s famous stack of game notes comes flying through the air – directly at Dave! 😂
These are the authentic, behind-the-scenes moments fans never get to see. When plans go sideways, tempers flare, and coaching legends transform into human paper shredders!
The good news? The defense stepped up, Iowa won, and decades later, Dave and Paul can laugh about it.

Pat Angerer "13 Losses and My Season Without Peyton Manning"
I was playing linebacker for the @Colts when @PeytonManning got hurt. …
I was playing linebacker for the @Colts when @PeytonManning got hurt. What followed tested every fiber of my being.
We lost 13 straight games. Our offense was consistently three-and-out, so I …made plenty of tackles but essentially played three seasons in one. Statistically good for me, mentally crushing for everyone.
I nearly surrendered to negativity. It’s tempting to point fingers during a losing streak that severe.
What saved me was @ErnieSims, who had experienced an 0-16 season with the @Lions. He warned us: “The media will try to tear you apart. We’ve got to stick together. Don’t point fingers, stay united.”
When we finally won a game, we celebrated like we’d won the Super Bowl. Though the coaches were fired after the season, I gained invaluable lessons in perseverance.
What I learned:
True character emerges during adversity, not success
Those who’ve faced failure become the most valuable leaders
Team unity is essential for surviving extreme challenges
To anyone in a similar situation: Find someone who’s been through it. Keep performing with excellence despite circumstances. Victory will taste sweeter because of what you endured.

From Underdog to Champion: How Facing My Fears Led to an Unforgettable Victory
Walking into Penn State’s “White Out” night game, the rain falling in …
Walking into Penn State’s “White Out” night game, the rain falling in Happy Valley, I felt that familiar pre-game tension. When they scored on the first play and their quarterback …flexed like a superhuman, my teammate and I exchanged glances that said it all: we might lose by 100 tonight.
The challenge seemed impossible—a ranked Penn State team in one of college football’s most hostile environments. I nearly mentally checked out right then.
But something made me embrace the fight instead of fearing it. We decided to muddy it up and make every down a battle.
The turning point came in the fourth quarter when Claiborne blocked a punt while we were in punt safe formation. That gave us the lead. I followed with an interception (though I foolishly tried to run over a lineman instead of cutting) and later forced a fumble.
We pulled off the upset, and that season became defined by close games we had no business winning. The victory wasn’t just for the team—it taught me that I could perform under extreme pressure when I stopped overthinking.
What I learned:
The biggest challenges bring the most satisfying victories
Mental toughness matters more than physical advantages
A team that refuses to quit is dangerous against any opponent
To anyone facing overwhelming odds: when everyone expects you to lose, you’re actually free from pressure. Keep fighting, embrace the underdog role, and you might just create something unforgettable. #shortsShow More

Why film study separated him from the pack

OUT TODAY! Don’t miss our raw, honest conversation with Hawkeye legend Chad Greenway!
In this episode, Chad opens up about the FEAR and ANXIETY he felt coming to Iowa: “I was …so scared to go there and fall on my face.” But what he discovered changed everything.
“75% of these guys are just exactly like me. Small town. We’re all the same dude.”
Chad reveals the beautiful truth about Iowa football culture: It was never about being a big-name recruit. Coach Ferentz, Parker, and Doyle simply “wanted to find guys that wanted to help them win.”
His underdog mentality became his superpower in a program where “you work, you break the rock” and become part of something bigger than yourself.
Listen NOW to hear Chad explain how Iowa teams might not win the “look test” against teams like Penn State, but “fundamentally and as a team, we’re going to be better than them.”

Imagine getting national recruiting letters as early as sixth grade. By eighth grade, the attention was huge. By freshman year? It exploded. 🚀📩
For most young athletes, that kind of spotlight …can be overwhelming. But for Tavian Banks? It was just normal.
💬 “I didn’t know anything different. I was always getting recruited. It didn’t faze me because that’s all I knew.”
His secret? He never let the hype define him. His family, his friends—they all kept him grounded. No special treatment, no distractions. Just football. 🏆
In today’s world, where social media magnifies recruiting even more, young athletes can learn from this mindset: Ignore the noise. Focus on your game. Let your talent do the talking. 🎤

“Why run full speed when I can beat them at three-quarter speed?” – Tavian Banks
Some players follow the playbook. Others see the game differently—slower, clearer, and with one goal in …mind: making big plays. That was Tavian’s mentality every time he touched the ball. 💨🔥
📺 As a kid, he studied game-changers—Rocket Ismail, Desmond Howard—rewatching college football tapes, learning how to create electricity on the field. His mindset? Find space. Get loose. Outrun everyone.
🔀 Sometimes, that meant ignoring the designed hole because he saw a bigger opening. Coaches might’ve lost their minds, but when you’re wired to create explosive plays, you trust your vision. And more often than not, it paid off. 💥
That’s what separates the good from the great. Some play the game. Others reshape it in real time.
Who’s a player that just had that instinct, that extra gear? Drop a name ⬇️
