Podcast Guests

Thank you for your interest in being a guest on the “Gallery and Hurley Unfiltered” podcast, where we interview former Iowa football players, coaches and staff to learn about their experiences, stories and reflections on their time as a Hawkeye.

The interview will be recorded using Zoom (both audio and video), and will take about 2-3 hours, as we will be getting pretty deep into your background. We want our audience to really get to know you, much more detailed than any newspaper article or interview has gotten while you were playing.

We will start out by having you talk about your football journey, from youth football, junior high, high school, your recruiting to Iowa, your playing days at Iowa, and anything beyond. That will take up most of the interview. You can view our past interviews here to get an idea how it will look.

Think about some interesting stories that you’d be willing to share publicly. Swearing is fine, we will just put an explicit warning on your episode which is not a problem. Think of it as a conversation between old teammates. We want you to be yourself!

  • Favorite game(s)
  • Best game performance
  • Worst game performance
  • Memories you think about from your playing days
  • Who you hung out with the most on the team
  • Favorite places to go (restaurants, road trips or spring breaks, etc)
  • Key coaches or staff that you remember or were influential with you
  • How did you manage the mental side of the game?
  • How did you manage the physical side of the game?
  • If you had to do it over again, what would you change (if anything)?

You can review the past Iowa games and schedules here to help you remember some of the games you played in. On the Hawkeye Recap site (developed by Brion), you can search to find your profile page. If you have any old photos or details you’d like to include, please email to us before or after the interview, so we can make sure it is up-to-date and accurate.

At the end, we will ask if you want the audience to be able to connect with you. You can promote your business and any groups you’re working with (if you’re coaching somewhere, helping a nonprofit, training or mentoring students or players, etc).

After the interview, we will edit the podcast to remove any sections you are not comfortable sharing, and add our watermarks and graphics. We are trying to record a few weeks in advance, so we will let you know what date it will be posted. Hopefully you will feel comfortable sharing the interview with your friends and family, as we think they might learn something new about you.

If there are technical problems, you can reach out to Nick at 510-305-3300 or Brion at 321-271-5361

Here are a few tips and tricks about the recording

1. Tech Setup

  • Computer: It is preferred to use a laptop or desktop computer, so we have a larger camera view and the camera is more stable. If you can only use your phone, then try and prop it up horizontally.
  • Camera: Please ensure your camera is at eye level and that you’re centered in the frame.
  • Microphone: Use an external microphone if available for better sound quality. If using headphones with a built-in mic, test the sound beforehand.
  • Lighting: Try to have a light source in front of you to avoid shadows. Natural light or soft indoor lighting works best.
  • Internet Connection: A stable, high-speed internet connection is crucial for video quality. If possible, use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi. You can test your internet connection speed in advance and make sure you have Zoom installed properly on your computer.

2. Background

  • Keep your background tidy and distraction-free. A simple background is ideal. If using a virtual background, choose something that is not too distracting.

3. Noise Control

  • Try to minimize background noise and distractions as much as possible (although we can always edit out any sections or technical problems). Ensure pets, roommates, or family members are aware of the recording time and find a quiet space.

4. Positioning

  • Sit comfortably and try to keep still during the interview.
  • Make sure your face is well-lit and visible, avoiding harsh shadows or bright light behind you.

5. Clothing

  • Avoid wearing clothes that are the same color as your background, so you don’t blend into any virtual backgrounds.

6. Recording Guidelines

  • You will be sent a calendar invitation from Nick or Brion with the Zoom link. Try and join within 5 minutes of the start time, or let us know if you are running late.
  • We’ll start with a quick sound and video check before we begin.
  • The interview will be casual and fun, so be yourself!
  • If you need a break or have any concerns during the interview, just let us know.

7. Permission to Record

  • Please confirm that you are comfortable with the session being recorded and that we have permission to use the video/audio for our podcast.
